In 2012, the Cornwall Community Co-Op will have openings for President, Vice President, and several board memberships. Founded in 2008, the Co-Op’s mission states “We are a sustainable cooperative enterprise committed to increasing the accessibility of local, wholesome, ethically produced products. We cultivate a spirit of belonging and well-being in our communities.”

Since its founding, the Co-Op has operated a retail storefront, managed the Cornwall Farmer’s Market, hosted numerous food-related and educational events such as film screenings and lectures, and operated a buying club for healthy food products such as grass-fed beef. We have more than 200 member families and many more community members who have shopped with us or attended events in the past.

Your Co-Op needs you now more than ever. To explore a leadership role, email Claudia Depkin at claudiajd@yahoo.com today, and help continue a great tradition of sustainability!

Who should join the board?

Anyone from the community (not just current members!) who believes in and wants to help bring the Co-op’s mission to life.

What’s expected of board members and officers?

Attend monthly Board meetings

Join and participate on committees

Volunteer for and lead specific initiatives/tasks

What skills do I need?

Anyone willing to make the Co-Op a priority and interact with other members is well-qualified to serve. In addition, experience and contacts in any of the following areas can be a plus:

business management

education

event production

financial management

food service

fundraising/development

general contracting

government

law

marketing

media/journalism

non-profit management

project management

PTO

retail

website management or social media

…other professional, volunteer, or project-based work

At our house we have a butterfly bush out back. Each spring we cut it down to the woody part of its double trunk, and by midsummer it’s eighteen feet high. It’s doing what it is meant to do, as well: shading the yard, attracting monarchs, tiger swallowtails, and the occasional hummingbird, and closing off the space for some backyard privacy.

The first year we lived here, we didn’t prune it because we didn’t know we were supposed to, and it didn’t do so well; dead branches and desiccated old blossoms got in the way of the new shoots, limbs hung down onto the ground, and it only brought weevils, cicadas and bats to the yard.

We read up a little, learned our lesson, and began to cut it. Now each summer its branches make a new pattern. Each summer it’s a different plant. But its shadow falls where we want it, the butterflies come, the green looks good in the breeze.

So, anyway, as you’ve already heard, the membership decided to close the Harvest Market. And there are new, different, great things in store. New Co-op. Same mission.

We need to know what you want to do next!

Now that the Harvest Market is closed and the Farmer’s Market is wrapping up for the season, the Board of Directors would like to find out what the membership would like to do next. Will it be a buying club, an indoor winter farmer’s market, movie viewings, field trips to farms and seminars, a healthy school lunch initiative, or something completely different? It’s up to all of us to decide what’s next for the co-op so we’re holding a membership meeting on Tuesday, November 9th at 7:30 PM at the Cornwall Presbyterian Church to plan for the future. It’s a dessert potluck and we need help setting up, cleaning up and making desserts and coffee/tea. Please contact Janine Bixler at janine.bixler@gmail.com if you are able to help. We estimate that we need 2-3 volunteers for this event. Please join us!

Dear Co-Op Members and Friends,

Are you interested in a locally-raised turkey for Thanksgiving? The Co-Op is coordinating an order with Hemlock Hill Farm for fresh, pastured, hormone- and antibiotic-free turkeys.

We have already begun taking orders. The cost is $3.99/lb., with turkeys available from 12-30 lbs.

There are three ways to order:

Visit the Co-Op stand at the Cornwall Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays between 10am and 5pm, from now until November 3.

Call Nancy Proyect at 845-542-5281.

Email info@cornwallcoop.com with your name and phone number. Mention the turkey order. A volunteer will respond to take your order.

Some details: Final orders are due by November 17. Pickup and payment (cash and check only) will be in Cornwall on November 23; a volunteer will call to remind you and give you the location. After the 17th, all orders are final, as the farm will prepare precisely the number of turkeys we request. We need volunteers for pickup and distribution to make this order happen; we’ll ask if you can help when you place your order.

Happy Thanksgiving!
The Cornwall Community Co-Op

PS: While the Co-Op’s Harvest Market has closed its doors, our mission is still strong:

We are a sustainable cooperative enterprise committed to increasing the accessibility of local, wholesome, ethically produced products. We cultivate a spirit of belonging and well-being in our communities.
